The word ‘tactical’ gets thrown around a lot these days. Generally speaking, a bag is only tactical if it has the telltale features of genuine military gear.

Some of these include heavy-duty and comfortable chest straps, durable fabrics like Cordura Nylon, small utility pockets and MOLLE webbing, rows of heavy-duty nylon stitched loops for the attachment of compatible pouches and accessories.

Tactical style backpacks are a more recent development than many people realize.

The MOLLE system was only introduced in 1997 but didn’t see widespread adoption until after the WTC attacks on September 11, 2001. It was deployed by U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan and later, Iraq.

Some compact tactical backpacks are more suited to a civilian’s everyday carry (EDC) than others.

Hopefully, most people have little need for bomb-proof laptop sleeves for example or features that may add unnecessary weight or bulk.

While not all the sling bags in this list are genuine 'tactical' backpacks and sling bags, they are all less than 20 liters in volume and perfect for your urban carry.

1. Kangol Husky Sling Bag

The Husky Sling Bag from Kangol is a compact faux leather sling bag featuring Kangol branding and an adjustable padded shoulder strap.
